Can't wait for next year! Visiting Scott and Laura's lower goose island home is a wonderful family retreat providing the best of both worlds- an island escape with proximity to Freeport. In addition to relaxing in comfort at the house, we enjoy walking the trails, kayaking, fishing and scouring the rocky beaches for treasures at low tide. Daily swims off the dock continue a longstanding Maine family tradition and our girls love trips to Paul's marina in Brunswick to get ice cream and penny candy. In past years we've also taken the short boat trip to Admiral Peary's Eagle Island state park and 'take out' at Harraseeket lunch 'n lobster. The animated seals at Grassy 'seal' Ledge are a riot and the birds are a treat to watch. Osprey, eagles, eider ducks, terns, cormorants, gulls, great blue heron, egrets and even a couple of loons welcomed us this year. Speaking of welcome, Laura and Scott are wonderful hosts, happy to share this slice of Casco Bay life. We look forward to first day 'sundown' dockside conversations and lobstering with them at week's end. The house is beautifully crafted and thoughtfully appointed with three bedrooms that work well for our four adult-one teen- two children family. The kitchen is outfitted with a gas refrigerator and stove and a full range of cookware and utensils. With cozy accommodations, a generator available for charging electronics and decent cellular service, this isn't exactly roughing it! The 'composting toilet' and outdoor shower give you the option to tell your friends you were. :) We love it here and look forward to our visit each year. Highly recommended.
Lower goose island experience Exceeded all expectations!
We had such an amazing time at the Lower Goose island cottage. Immaculate cottage and outhouse! Hot and cold water in outdoor shower a treat. Cottage is not only the epitome of island cottage/camp style and comfort but beautifully constructed and furnished w/ every conceivable amenity. We (two couples) spread out and had room for others (next time). The beds are excellent....so comfortable and the atmosphere so relaxing that our snorers forgot to snore! Our hosts, Scott and Laura and Sally, the sweet lab, thought of everything. Lobstering and a succulent lobster feast were a bonus. All communications and the reservation process were timely and uneventful. Our hosts patiently put up with all our questions and generously shared their wisdom and experiences with us. Look forward to returning time and time again.
Best Vacation! I don't think you can beat this location if you're looking for the loveliest ocean views and access, relaxation and the perfect mix of the outdoors and comfort. My fiancé and I stayed out for a week and wished we could have stayed for the whole summer. The mix of "camping" (outhouse, which might be the cleanest I've ever used, outdoor shower with warm water, gas lights, etc.) with the comforts of home (awesome kitchen with fridge and every utensil you would ever need, comfy beds and furniture) make it something of an adventure without really having to be inconvenienced at all. It was the perfect getaway from phones, computers, work and every other mainland distraction. Island life for a week was a great way to recharge.
Three Generations Enjoyed This Maine Island Cottage Three generations spent a second vacation at the cottage. We were warmly greeted by our hosts and had time to catch up on the events of the year on the boat ride from the Royal River Marina to the island. Since last year, grass has been planted and is growing at the side of the cottage and the garden is alive with fern and day lilies. A shed has been built which houses the generator where we charged our multitude of electronic devices and mobile phones. The upstairs bedrooms had some new decorations. We found Casco Bay and Lower Goose to be as beautiful as ever and to offer many things to do. We hiked around the island and through its interior where we saw a dramatic stand of beech trees. The girls fished in the early morning from the dock and at breakfast, we shared a taste of their catch of small fish which we cooked up on the porch grill. We kayaked, swam, made two trips to Mere Point for penny candy for the girls and Jumping Judy's Java for the adults. We kayaked around the island and over to the seals who rewarded us with their vocal performances. An osprey nest was close by and we saw and heard the birds as we sat on the front terrace enjoying one of the many spectacular views of the bay. The cottage is comfortably furnished and has a well appointed kitchen. Its long dining table is conducive to sharing family meals and adventures of the day. After dinner, by the light of gas lamps, we migrated to the living room to read, work on a jigsaw puzzle or just enjoy the view. The downstairs bedroom looks out on the bay and while still in bed enabled us to welcome each morning as the sun rose or the fog rolled in. The upstairs bedrooms are spacious and also have wonderful views. On our last evening, a large rainbow arced across the sky above the bay, a fitting end to a wonderful vacation. All in all, this cottage and its owners are better than advertised. It is a beautiful, well maintained and clean property with lots to do and warm welcoming hosts. We highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the beauty and peacefulness of being on an island in Casco Bay.
Beautiful Vacation Spot! My husband and I recently went here for our honeymoon and it was perfect! We wanted to go somewhere remote, but we didn't want to spend 2 days flying. We had looked into a ton of rentals, but they were missing the feeling of luxury that we wanted for our honeymoon. When we saw the photos of this cottage, we knew that we'd found the right place. The house is gorgeous -- it was a perfect a mix of rustic and shabby chic. We loved spending time on the outdoor patio, private dock and the yard that overlooked the ocean. It was such a peaceful vacation -- we kayaked, visited the neighboring islands, explored Lower Goose by foot and of course sat by the fire pit every night. And the owners were so helpful throughout the entire process from booking to leaving -- we couldn't have been more pleased and will definitely be going back (the place was a great size so we'll have to bring friends next time)!
This Lower Goose cottage vacation exceeded all expectations. The cottage is a sunny, airy, comfortable and immaculately clean location for a family vacation. Three generations spent a wonderful week as guests of the warm and generous owners. The fully equipped kitchen, with attention to every detail, the fine towels and linens and comfortable furnishings provided luxury against the beauty of Casco Bay and its forested islands. We kayaked, swam and fished off the dock, hiked, spent peaceful hours in the hammock, road the four wheel all terrain vehicle, roamed the beach, explored the woods for natural treasure and enjoyed an unusual lobster experience, culinary and otherwise. Trips to Eagle Island, Mere Point and Harraseeket added adventure. Surely a winner and place to return to.
Paradise! This island and cottage are beautiful, remote, clean, and stress-relieving. I was turning 50. My wife and mother complained that I am impossible to buy things for. I told them that it was because I don't need any more things in my cluttered life. So they put their brains together and decided to give me this experience. And what a fantastic experience it was! I love natural beauty and was not disappointed. Kayaking around the island (takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the tide) I saw lots of seals (found two seal skulls by spotting eagles on the shore eating something), saw two dolphins, raccoons and then at least 10 bird species. The massive eagles were the most impressive, though there were also cormorants, grebes, ducks, herons, gulls, loons and ospreys. My children and nephew, ages 7, 10, 11 and 12 were beside themselves playing on the island. There was hardly any quarreling because they were all so busy exploring and playing. When not in the kayaks they were picking along the shore catching crabs, shrimps and snails. At night they were out like lights. On the way back, the owners Scott and Laura hauled out their lobster traps, which was fun and educational for both kids and adults. Scott and Laura are just the nicest people. They treated us like family, not like renters. Because we stayed at the end of October there were hardly any others on the island besides our group. It was just so peaceful. We kept the house warm with the two excellent woodstoves. After the kids went to bed, we adults drank a bit and talked, cleaned up after dinner, and read by the propane lanterns. When we needed more light or to plug in laptops we just turned on the generator. The house itself is lovely. It is not a camp or cabin, but a well-built house with big windows that look out over the sea. In the morning the sunrises were a deep and glowing pink and orange. At night the sky was full of stars until the moon came out. We used their telescope to look at craters. There is nothing negative to say. Two things that those used to creature comforts might not like are the propane heated shower (hot but little pressure, but who cares, it was hot) and the outhouses. There are two good outhouses. But for people expecting a house toilet, sorry. At night we used the sit-a-potty because that was easier than walking the 35 feet to the outhouse. We look forward to going back to this rugged paradise and warm hospitality again in the future. Thanks for the best ever birthday present!
Exceptional! For adventurous adults & families looking for a true getaway from the normal routine
We loved this place from the moment we arrived! The cottage & guest bunk house were very clean and well appointed, with comfortable accommodations for multiple families and friends. Our gracious and accommodating hosts made certain that we had everything necessary for a wonderful vacation. Natural beauty & wildlife could be seen everywhere we turned. Watched waterfowl and Osprey fishing for their meals as the tide came and left. Seals gathered within eyesight on a nearby ledge and a Bald Eagle was spotted soaring high above the water's edge. Words can't adequately describe the beautiful scenery that surrounds you with a constantly changing seascape. This is truly a boaters paradise! Exceptional deepwater dock & moorings, with popular anchorage within view. Easy access via boat to Harpswell, Freeport, Yarmouth & points south into Portland. Watch lobster boats, pleasure-craft, & kayaks cruising nearby waters. Explore the many nearby islands of Casco Bay. Local seafood is available from a number of nearby sources and the cottage is well equipped for the do-it-yourself lobster & clam feast. Our teenage children enjoyed swimming off the dock, kayaking to nearby seals, exploring island trails, playing board games in the cottage, sunbathing & reading (yes, reading "real books"). A highlight activity was learning how to pull & bait lobster traps with our hosts, on their incredible 41 foot custom built boat. The cottage on Lower Goose Island is highly recommended for those wanting to unplug from the mainland to enjoy all that the wonderful islands of Casco Bay have to offer. We'll definitely be back!
Bunk House is available for an additional $750/wk
